Barbee Family Reunion Minutes

October 7, 2012

President Leonard Wiggins, son of Ida Sutton Barbee and Junius I. Wiggins and grandson of Baxter and Ida Battle Barbee welcomed everyone and called the reunion meeting to order at 1:00 PM at the First Christian Church in Richlands, NC, with approximately 150 people in attendance.

Memorial Service: Ann Davis, granddaughter of Cader and Bessie Barbee read from Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 as the scripture for the Memorial Service for Jimmy(James Felix) Cox. He was the son of Garland Francis and Sadie Lee Cox, grandson of Delor Kate Barbee and Charles Cox IV, and great grandson of Martha Jane Burke and Isaiah Grayson Barbee.

Barbee Family Song: E.W. Barbee and Ervin Morton, grandsons of Cader and Bessie Barbee led the group in singing the Barbee Reunion Song, sung to the tune of “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”. They reminded members that it was written by Ernestine Bryan Wood and Evangeline Bryan Ipock (from Cove City), daughters of Oscar Dodson and Emma Claudia Barbee Bryan, great granddaughters of William Minter and Susan Francis Jarman Barbee.

Blessing: E.W. Barbee prayed a blessing over the food and family members enjoyed the prepared feast.

Following the meal, President Lyn continued the business meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: Michelle Rowe, granddaughter of William Lindy and Margaret Burns Barbee, great granddaughter of William Burke and Lucy L. Huffman Barbee, and great, great granddaughter of William Minter and Susan F. Jarman talked with the family about our financial dilemma. We had $34.03 in the treasury. Our two expenses are taking care of the Barbee Family graveyard located on Barbee Road and reimbursing families for hosting the reunions. This year was particularly expensive because Jimmy Cox had passed away and he had taken care of the cemetery with no financial compensation in the past. E.W. Barbee made a motion that the cemetery be treated with Roundup twice a year. The motion was seconded but did not pass.

Anne Shout, granddaughter of Martha Laeurah Barbee and George Petteway, challenged each family unit to a $50 contribution to the treasury. The collection baskets were passed.

Darlene Barbee, wife of Reid Barbee who is grandson of Thomas Linwood and Dollie Trott Barbee and grandson of Thomas Ferman Barbee, made another motion to use Roundup on the family cemetery. The motion was seconded and passed.

Michelle reported that the passing of the basket resulted in over $700 collected.

President’s Historical Facts: President Lyn reported on some little known facts regarding the Barbee family. Contrary to popular belief, Isaiah and Martha Jane Burke Barbee may not have been the first Barbees to settle in Onslow County. According to his research, a Hannah Ann Barbee, born April 12, 1685 in Christ Church, Lancaster County Virginia, married John Morgan in 1704 in Essex County, Virginia. She and her husband had 9 children. When her husband John Morgan died she married Thomas Caruthers in 1734 and moved with her new husband and Morgan children to Onslow County. There are some Morgan descendants still living in Onslow County. The research was verified by local historian Dennis Jones.

Election of officers: New officers elected were Ann Davis, secretary and Ervin Morton, historian. The family website can be visited at www.gsomorton.com/ancestry.
